The Department of Anesthesiology's 11th Annual Research Exposition highlighting work in both our basic science and clinical research divisions was held on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. The event began with opening remarks from Department Chair Dr. Hugh Hemmings, followed by a brief presentation from our highly- esteemed professor emeritus of anesthesiology, Dr. Alan Van Poznak. Dr. Kane Pryor, director of clinical research, gave a State of the Research Address that highlighted current work in both the basic science and clinical research divisions.
We heard oral presentations from Robert White, MD and Seyed Safavynia, MD, PhD, both Van Poznak Scholars and members of the residency class of 2018. Our special guest speaker was Kate Leslie, MBBS, MD, MEpid, MHlthServMt, FANZCA, FAHMS Professor, Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Royal Melbourne Hospital Chair, Advisory Board, Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Unit, University of Melbourne Chair, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trials Network Executive. Dr. Leslie delivered an informative presentation titled "Establishing a career in perioperative research" that resounded with our audience of budding and experienced researchers.
Another highlight from the Research Expo was the poster presentations, representing work presented at various conferences over the past year. Poster presentations were given by Mattia Malvezzi, BS; Paul Riegelhaupt, MD, PhD; Angela Selzer, MD; and Zachary Turnbull, MD. Dr. Leslie also served as guest judge to award book prizes for the best poster presentations in both laboratory and clinical research.
