Pediatric Anesthesiology

The pediatric anesthesiology team at Weill Cornell Medicine is specifically trained in the care and unique needs of pediatric patients throughout the perioperative period. We have extensive experience in providing anesthesia for the full spectrum of pediatric surgical care. Our goal is to provide safe, family-centered, state-of-the-art anesthetic care in a compassionate environment that promotes the well-being of all children in our care.

Clinical

Our pediatric anesthesiologists provide excellent care across many surgical sub-specialties such as pediatric urology, ENT, general surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Additionally, non-operating room (NORA) procedures form a significant part of pediatric anesthesia coverage. These procedures include pediatric gastroenterology, dental surgery, oral rehabilitation, kidney and liver biopsies, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, interventional neuroradiology, and diagnostic imaging such as MRI, PET and CT. In total, pediatric anesthesiology faculty cover an annual volume of 5,000-6,000 cases at locations including the main hospital, David H. Koch Center and the NewYork-Presbyterian Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns.

The pediatric anesthesiology team collaborates closely with specialists and clinical staff at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital to optimize patient care in the hospital, whether it’s a same-day procedure or an inpatient admission.  We customize our anesthetic management by age, underlying medical conditions, procedural type and individual needs, while taking steps to minimize the child’s anxiety. Our pediatric and regional anesthesiology teams are skilled in multi-modal analgesia in the pediatric population. And we are fortunate to work with a dedicated team of child life professionals who assist by providing support and reassurance to children and families prior to a procedure or surgery.

Education

The residency program provides the resident with clinical experience in the anesthetic management of patients undergoing pediatric surgery. This clinical experience is supplemented by formal and informal didactics, instruction and guided independent study. With the completion of this rotation trainees will have demonstrated proficiency in caring for patients with complicated medical problems in a compassionate manner. This includes preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management and postoperative care utilizing the most current medical knowledge pertinent to each case.

Research

Members of the division are actively engaged in a wide range of research, from establishing reference values for neonatal vital signs to improving the delivery of preoperative care and advancing brain health. Their work spans the full spectrum of scientific inquiry, from basic science to epidemiology.
