Weill Cornell Anesthesiologists Turn Out for SCA Annual Meeting and Workshops

Weill Cornell Anesthesiology was well-represented at the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) 38th Annual Meeting and Workshops. Eight department members gave lectures, participated in workshops and discussions, and presented posters at the event, held in San Diego on April 2-6.

Among the highlights, Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology Dr. Nikolaos Skubas presented two lectures. He discussed problems that occur when evaluating the function of the tricuspid valve, and lectured on artifacts and pitfalls during transesophageal echocardiography. Dr. Skubas also participated in two workshops, demonstrating how to analyze echocardiographic images for estimation of cardiac deformation and percutaneous transcatheter interventions. He participated with colleagues from other academic centers in Echo Jeopardy as part of "The East Coast Team."

Dr. Lisa Rong, instructor in anesthesiology, presented a challenging echocardiographic case in the "Super Echo" session.

Several interesting clincial cases were discussed during the poster presentations. Among the department members presenting were Drs. Kiri Mackersey, June Chan and Stephanie Willet, mentored by Drs. Rong and Skubas.

The meeting provided participants with opportunities to interact with faculty from national and international cardiothoracic anesthesia departments, and to reconnect with Weill Cornell alumni.

Founded in 1978, the SCA is an international organization of nearly 5,000 cardiac, thoracic, and vascular anesthesiolgists that promotes excellence in clinical care, education, and research.
