General/Multi-Specialty Anesthesiology

General/Multi-Specialty Anesthesiology team members are experts in a wide variety of surgical and procedural specialties. We frequently perform high-acuity anesthetic care for medically complex patients.  We provide anesthesiology services for adult patients undergoing surgeries such as bariatric, breast, colorectal, ENT, endocrine, gynecologic, oral, plastic, urologic and vascular. Faculty are experts in the use of advanced airway management, one-lung ventilation, invasive monitoring (i.e., intra-arterial and central venous pressure), treatment of massive hemorrhage, and management of patients with complex medical histories for non-cardiac surgery.

Clinical

Our team provides clinical services in numerous areas including:

  • Benign Gynecologic, Breast, ENT, Plastics
  • Burns: The William Randolph Hearst Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center provides comprehensive care to children and adults in New York City and the surrounding area who have sustained burn injuries. It is one of the largest burn centers in the country.  We staff a dedicated burn operating room three days a week and provide services for dressing changes in the burn intensive care unit.  On average, we provide care to over 500 burned patients including patients with >20% total body surface burns.
  • Endocrine surgery: Including pheochromocytoma resection.
  • Gynecological oncology: Including major tumor debulking cases using hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS): Including orthognathic surgery (Le Fort osteotomies).  Techniques used include nasal fiberoptic intubation, induced hypotensive anesthesia, and the use of anti-fibrinolytics.
  • Trauma: We are an American College of Surgeons Level 1Trauma Center and are one of the two New York State Level One Trauma Centers in the borough of Manhattan. We are a receiving hospital for 911 calls to the New York City fire department. In our high-volume trauma center, we have >300 Level 1 traumas and >120 Level 2 activations annually. Care for these patients often involves the utilization of massive transfusion protocols (MTP) and point of coagulation testing (ROTEM®).
  • Urological surgery: Including robotic prostatectomies, Urologic oncology, and cystoscopic procedures.
  • Vascular surgery: We provide care for the following procedures: complex open and endovascular aortic reconstructions, endovascular interventions for peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery revascularization, carotid-subclavian bypass, foot and leg wound debridement, peripheral vascular surgery and amputations.

Education

Resident training includes specialty-specific intraoperative teaching. At the conclusion of each month-long vascular and thoracic anesthesia rotation, residents deliver a presentation to the faculty on a topic of their choice related to a topic of interest discovered during the rotation. All team members contribute to the academic mission of the residency by delivering specialty specific didactic resident lectures. Some faculty provide educational services to other divisions including cardiothoracic, global health, liver transplant, acute pain management, and regional anesthesia
