Chief Residents 2025-2026
Alice Alexandrov, MD

Alice Alexandrov is a New Yorker through and through, having been born in Queens and being raised mostly in the suburbs. As a kid that always asked a thousand questions and loved hands-on labs in science class, medicine became a perfect career destination. Alice made Dean’s List all four years at Cornell University while majoring in Human Development and was inducted in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society at New York Medical College, where she remembers having “a really fun time.” (She later also described intern year as a “genuinely a good time.”) While enjoying most of the clinical rotations, anesthesiology ended up being the one that had an attractive amount of ownership over the patients, an admirably vast scope of knowledge mastery, and vital, life-saving procedural components – all within a professional culture that typically projects decency and kindness and demands respect. Beyond residency, Dr. Alexandrov currently actively seeks a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
Alice enjoys the outdoors and as a child loved summer camp where she learned how to make fast and lifelong friends, and more importantly, how to be a team player, and how to get along and succeed with all sorts of people (think building, and then sharing, a tent). The biggest life skill that she carries with her from all those summers is that enthusiasm and effort pave the way for achieving greatness whether it be teaching water skiing and horseback riding, leadership (she rose the staff ranks to a camp director) or ultimately, becoming an outstanding doctor. Alice is an enthusiastic member of our community, volunteering to be a Resident Forum Representative with GME, and has several abstracts and posters at ASRA, SCA, and ASA. Lastly, one cannot overlook that she has also been a standout asset at departmental softball games!
James (Jimmy) Germi, MD, MSTR

Jimmy Germi is from Miami, Florida. Before coming to New York for anesthesiology training, he spent many years in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania, first earning a bachelor’s degree in the Biological Basis of Behavior (magna cum laude), and then his medical degree alongside a master of science in translational research (MSTR) in neuroscience. From second grade until the months leading up to applying for residency, Dr. Germi thought he wanted to be a neurosurgeon to help discover more about how the brain works and contribute to new treatments to help patients recover from brain injury. Thankfully, he found anesthesiology before it was too late. He loves that almost every day, a career in medicine brings a very clear purpose — to take care of patients; it is that sense of purpose that makes early morning wake ups much more palatable and fuels a constant drive to be a better doctor each day. A lifelong learner, Jimmy plans to pursue a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
Jimmy is thorough in his work and is great in his communication with patients and medical teams. He is always happy to do whatever is necessary to support his co-residents: he arrives early and stays late, and he gets along with everyone from patient care assistants to surgical attendings. It is therefore no surprise that Dr. Germi has won both departmental and institution-wide GME Housestaff of the Month awards in recognition of selflessness surrounding voluntary extra work in order to support his peers. Jimmy is a voice of reason in several settings and has already developed a commanding presence among his cohort.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Germi is known as a very thoughtful, kind, and mature member of our community and someone who also clearly and admirably focuses successfully on balance. Since he was an intern, he has been a formidable adversary and top-performing, recurrent leaderboard achiever during the department-wide spring fitness challenge (congrats to his third-place overall team!).
Alessandra (Al) Riccio, MD

Alessandra Riccio is originally from Long Island. She earned her undergraduate bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Stony Brook University where she graduated summa cum laude, was on the Dean’s List all four years, and was valedictorian. The University of Virginia, where she earned her medical degree, prepared her so well that she has been widely known as one of the most naturally gifted residents in anesthesiology since her intern year. Always drawn to mastering acute care physiology and pharmacology in real time, it should be no surprise that after residency, Dr. Riccio will complete both cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine fellowships. She is destined to be a serious academic with a focus in medical education and is co-leading initiatives for journal clubs, board preparation, and simulations within the department while simultaneously having scholarly work showcased at SCA, IARS and PGA.
Dr. Riccio is a resilient, balanced, and caring physician whose passion for our craft and natural ability is apparent from every angle. She is an advanced open water SCUBA diver, loves to cook Italian food, and fitness plays a big role in her life. Al’s natural clinical intuition and knack for learning and practicing anesthesiology and acute care/critical care medicine stood out to all from the beginning of her time at Cornell. Many have often wondered how to bottle her special brand of magic and in the end, the department figured out the best way: elect her as one of our Chief Residents.
A Message From the Chief Residents
A warm welcome from the residents of the Weill Cornell Medicine's Anesthesiology Residency Program! We’re thrilled that you’re interested in learning more about what makes our program such a special and inspiring place to train.
Located in the heart of New York City, our residency offers not only world-class medical training but also the opportunity to live in one of the most vibrant and culturally rich cities in the world. Whether you're exploring Central Park, discovering a new neighborhood, or enjoying world-renowned food and art scenes, the energy and diversity of NYC are woven into the fabric of our daily lives.
We train at three nationally acclaimed institutions right across the street from each other: Weill Cornell Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). These institutions offer a combined experience unmatched in breadth and depth.
Our Regional Anesthesiology experience is arguably the best in the country. Our Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology provides anesthesia for everything from heart transplants to valve repairs. We have one of the highest volume obstetrics units in the country. Our integrated pediatrics hospital offers exposure to pediatric anesthesiology throughout the entire year rather than being restricted to individual rotations. We see a large volume of thoracic cases at both Weill Cornell and MSKCC. Our liver transplant program offers great learning opportunities. Our residents rotate through the MSKCC ICU, Burn ICU, Neuro ICU and Cardiothoracic ICU. Our rotations at HSS and our ambulatory hospital expose residents to private practice and hybrid “privademic” models of anesthesiology. No matter what your career goals are, Weill Cornell will prepare you to achieve your goals.
What truly sets our program apart is our collaborative and supportive culture. Our residency is united by a strong sense of camaraderie. From catching up in our lounge during our guaranteed morning coffee break, to monthly happy hours and yearly class retreats, we’re close friends both inside and outside of the hospital. Faculty regularly attend social events and take an active role in mentorship and teaching. Our Residency Support Council (RSC) further fosters wellness by planning social gatherings and helping residents transition smoothly between rotations.
Resident education is a top priority. We have structured daily lectures for interns, three weekly lectures for senior residents with protected time, and regular simulation and ultrasound training. Additionally, we offer unique electives such as global health in Rwanda and veterinary anesthesia at Cornell’s veterinary school in Ithaca. For those interested in research, our department offers robust support, including the Van Poznak Scholarship Program, with opportunities to collaborate across institutions like Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller University, MSKCC and HSS.
At Weill Cornell, we practice, not only evidence-based, but also humanistic, patient-centered medicine. We are proud to be a community of passionate, diverse and forward-thinking residents who support one another and continually strive for excellence.
We’re excited to welcome our incoming Class of 2029 and look forward to meeting you on the interview trail!
