I have been in constant contact with our colleagues in Punjab and they are having an amazing experience. CA-3’s Lee Rasamny and Michelle Shirak are accompanied by Greg Kerr (cardiac anesthesiologist, Director of Cornell’s Cardiothoracic I.C.U. and NYP’s Inter-ICU Council), this elective’s faculty participant. It’s so amazing to watch each trip have such a unique and individualized two-week elective even though the foundational principles and programming are essentially the same: OR anesthesia in the mornings and experiential didactics rooted in medical anthropology in the afternoon. We just presented this novel approach to Global Health Training at the A.S.A. and it seems that Lee, Michelle, and Greg are fully engaged in the rich and immersive education.
Here's an excerpt from the Residents’ travel journal:
“As far as our own personal goals we both wish to enhance our understanding of many issues affecting this society both inside the hospital and in the community so that we may return, forever changed, and within us an ignited drive to make an impact.”
The Residents have been sending back photos as well:
