Another Interview Season Coming to a Close

February 3, 2014

We're nearly done with another interview season and I find myself wondering (again) why I continue to be surprised by the caliber of this year's applicant pool. Each year, the graduating medical students impress us more and more, and the interview day debriefing sessions are not complete without the obligatory "There's no way I would get into this program if I were applying today" comments made by the interviewers sitting around the table.

I'd like to thank all of the more than 200 applicants that visited with us this year. Of course, it's exciting for me to recruit a new class of residents to train in Anesthesiology, but as I've expressed to many of you this season in my office, the best part for me is hearing about all of the wonderful things you've already accomplished so early on in your careers.

This year alone, I've interviewed symphonic composers, medical device innovators, scholars on international health care systems, human rights and global health experts... let alone the impressively productive academic work you've done that runs the gamut from robust basic science work to clinical outcomes research. Learning from you has been inspiring and I will be excited to follow your careers in the years to come. Best of luck in the 2014 Match!
