Welcome from the Residency Program Director

Welcome to the anesthesiology residency and fellowship training programs at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. It is a distinct honor to oversee the training of 82 resident anesthesiologists and numerous ACGME and non-ACGME fellows at a world-class institution in New York City.

The Department of Anesthesiology of Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital sits at the forefront of patient care, academic medicine, and research, all the while promoting excellence in the education of its trainees.

Our categorical residency program begins with a transitional style internship that incorporates three months of clinical anesthesiology during the PGY-1 year. Throughout the four years of residency, beyond completing the bulk of their training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, our residents rotate through Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery; The Rockefeller University, as a scientific partner, as well as Cornell Tech, are two additional readily available resources. Supplementing the trainees’ experiences at two other highly specialized institutions provides an unparalleled complete program for our residents. Particular strengths of our training include regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine, chronic pain management, critical care medicine, neuroanesthesia, global health, and big data, outcomes-based research with a focus on quality improvement and patient safety.

Weill Cornell Medicine's anesthesiology department prides itself on nurturing physicians for 21st century medicine. This means developing a didactic and clinical curriculum that prepares our graduates for the most competitive and rigorous fellowship programs and academic careers. It means delivering educational platforms that are innovative, digital, and responsive to the needs of the current generation of learners. It means considering health, disease, and health care systems beyond New York City, as the safe provision of anesthesia care is often the bottleneck for essential patient care services in low income and low resource settings worldwide. And most importantly, it means providing a culture and clinical learning environment for all of our trainees that prioritizes emotional, mental, and physical well-being as essential attributes in the development of compassionate, fulfilled, and expert consultants in anesthesiology.

New York City's patients are from all over the world and from all backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences. Representation matters in our community and our residency program reflects and values diversity in the trainees we actively recruit and match. Our mission demands that every individual finds Weill Cornell Medicine's anesthesiology department to be a place that allows one to comfortably be and express themselves without question so that they can focus primarily on becoming the best anesthesiologist possible. We are committed to evidence-based practice on diversity, equity and inclusion research in our education programs as well as in patient care.

It's an exciting time to be a part of Weill Cornell Medicine's Department of Anesthesiology! Please spend some time exploring our community within these pages.
