Notes from a New Academic Year

September 11, 2014

The academic year is in full swing here at Weill Cornell after an incredibly enjoyable and productive summer. Graduation in June was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the Class of 2014’s successes. I was incredibly moved by our graduating seniors who during my ‘roast’ presented me with my very own bobble-head doll! It was accompanied by a slide show displaying the thousands of frequent flier miles it had been accruing unbeknownst to me over the past few years…

As sad as it was to say farewell to the Class of 2014, the Class of 2018 has begun their residency training seamlessly. This diverse, worldly, and accomplished group of interns is already making a great impression - especially the group that is finishing up their three anesthesia months. In August, Dr. Jenica Lampl (CA-1) was awarded a “Good Catch Award” by the hospital – yet another example of our housestaff being champions of quality and patient safety.

Our recently re-imagined and incredibly popular formal didactic program has begun. This year, we in the education suite are working closely with representatives from Apple to move the curriculum and content into Itunes University. A huge congratulation to the CA-2 class – each and every resident passed the ABA’s new Basic Exam! Coming on the heels of the 100% written board pass rate for the Class of 2014 proves to me that not only is our educational programming very popular with the housestaff, but it also yields results.

Many in the department are preparing to travel to New Orleans in just a few short weeks for the ASA’s annual conference. We have an unprecedented number of residents participating this year. Altogether, roughly fifteen residents (most of whom are presenting original work) will be in attendance. We also have one FAER scholar and one resident serving on the House of Delegates.

Michelle Shirak and Lee Rasamny, two of our CA-3’s, will be accompanying faculty member Dr. Greg Kerr during this Fall’s Global Health elective in India. Dr. Gunisha Kaur, Director of Cornell Anesthesiology’s Punjab Institute, is accepting applicants for our Global Health Fellowship and those interested in international health should check out our department’s efforts here.

A very exciting beginning to our year thus far - and in just a few short days I will begin reviewing applications on ERAS! I look forward to meeting a whole new batch of applicants in the coming months.
