
Widespread pain, sleep problems and mood disturbances are symptoms of fibromyalgia, a soft tissue pain syndrome that is more common in women than in men.

Dr. Lisa Witkin, assistant professor of anesthesiology, discusses fibromyalgia and its treatment in the February issue of Women’s Health Advisor, a newsletter of the Iris Cantor Women’s Health Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Witkin is the site director for pain medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital.
While no cure exists for fibromyalgia, Dr. Witkin says that "education, lifestyle changes and appropriate medication management by a specialist can help patients achieve significant improvement in symptoms and overall quality of life."
