Dr. Hugh Hemmings Appointed Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia

Hugh C. Hemmings Jr., M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.A., has been named the editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, a leading academic journal that has been the forum for many groundbreaking advances in the specialty of anesthesiology, including critical care, pain and peri-operative medicine. It has the highest journal impact factor of all journals in the anesthesiology category.

Dr. Hemmings is professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and The Joseph F. Artusio, Jr. Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, and anesthesiologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

“I am honored to be appointed as editor-in-chief of such an innovative and influential journal," said Dr. Hemmings. "I am thrilled to guide this outstanding journal as a voice for international progress in academic anesthesiology through support of education and research.”

Dr. Hemmings, whose term will commence on January 1, 2017, will be the twelfth editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, which was founded in 1923 and is the second oldest journal in the specialty. He has served as an editor board member for the journal since 2006.

Dr. Hemmings’ clinical practice is cardiothoracic anesthesia. His research interests include anesthetic neuropharmacology and the molecular and cellular basis of general anesthesia. His research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health.

He is the editor of two textbooks, more than 30 book chapters and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He previously served as editor for the British Journal of Anaesthesia and of Anesthesiology.
