Dr. Ahmed Interviewed by the New York Times about Pain Medication Effectiveness

Shakil Ahmed, MBBS, Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, Division of Pain Medicine, was interviewed recently by C. Claiborne Ray of the New York Times for the popular “Science Q&A” column. Mr. Ray asked Dr. Ahmed about the phenomenon of pain medication decreasing in effectiveness over time – known as “tolerance.”

Dr. Ahmed described how patients can sometimes develop a tolerance for a particular medication. He also discussed alternative methods of treating pain conditions if a patient does experience tolerance - many of which are part of the clinical and research programs at Weill Cornell Pain Medicine.
