The Department of Anesthesiology honored its graduating residents on Friday, June 9 at Guastavino's, a historic restaurant and Manhattan landmark. Under the occasional rumble of the 59th Street Bridge, twenty residents and their loved ones gathered for an evening of celebration.
Department Chair Dr. Hugh C. Hemmings, Jr. opened the program, noting that 2023 is a special year.
"It's 125 years since Cornell University Medical College was founded, 75 years since this department was founded, and 10 years since I've been chair,” he said, adding "tonight we are here to celebrate our graduating residents!"

Dr. Eric Brumberger, the residency program director, spoke about the challenges the Class of 2023 had faced as the COVID pandemic struck early in their training.
“You all persevered, you stayed steadfast to your commitments to your training and to your patients during those early months and years, and you displayed remarkable adaptability and resilience as you came into your own.”
The evening continued with a guessing game devised by the CA2 residents as each graduate was called to the podium.

Dr. Kane Pryor, executive vice chair for academic affairs, took the stage to present resident and faculty awards, and to address the graduates, the world-class faculty who trained them, and the loved ones in the audience.
“We know that none of the success that we are celebrating here tonight could have occurred without you and your support,” he said to assembled family and friends.
Congratulations to the department’s 2023 graduates and award winners! They are:
