Spring 2015 Global Health Elective in Punjab, India Underway

March 18, 2015

Our spring elective has just commenced and CA3’s Eric Chavoustie (Class of 2015) and Dr. Zack Turnbull (Class of 2015) are alongside faculty member Dr. Angela Selzer. All of them are halfway done with their first week in India. We primed them here at home with an intensive syllabus and reading group, and they are now fully immersed in the Anesthesia Department in Amritsar as well as receiving a global health education in the afternoons. Excerpts and pictures from their travel diary:

And we are off! Eager and ready to get started on our adventure across the world, as our very own, part time cab driver, Dr. Kaur drives us to JFK - what a warm send off!

Our group had a layover in Dubai.

After a rather complicated transfer in Delhi, we made it to Amritsar!

A bit tired but still staying strong, we met our driver Babu and translator Suhkjot on our way to our hotel in Amritsar. After a quick nap we made a night stop at the golden temple. Such a sight and what beauty. A serene place with so much history.

Our first day at Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital.

We first met with Dr. Gunisha Kaur's uncle, one of Amritsar's finest plastic surgeons, and shared cha tea while viewing the pictures of all of his unique cases that line the hospital walls.

After learning much from Dr. Singh, we were introduced to Dr. Ruchi and the other anesthesiology consultants in the hospital.

We toured the numerous units in the hospital, the ICUs, the maternal wards and the Operating Theaters and even saw one of their original anesthetia machines with ether still attached.

We cannot wait until tomorrow!

More scenes from Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital, including the anesthesia machine.

I'll post further updates as the Global Health elective participants continue their journey.

I look forward to continuing to post updates as the participants in our Global Health elective continue their work.
