The post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center provides high quality clinical care to patients immediately after surgery. Delivering timely and compassionate care that addresses each patient’s unique clinical needs is our top priority.
Clinical
Our multidisciplinary PACU team includes anesthesiology faculty (most board-certified in critical care), resident physicians, PACU nursing staff, respiratory therapists, PACU administrative staff, and PACU ancillary staff.
The PACU team provides comprehensive clinical care that ranges from routine, postoperative care — such as management of postoperative pain and nausea/vomiting — to stabilization of the acutely decompensating patient. We serve as the airway team for the hospital, providing airway expertise for emergency airways, cardiac arrests, and Level 1 trauma activations.
The PACU team provides anesthesiology consultations for complex, hospitalized patients scheduled for surgery and other interventions.
We assist in coordinating care for the postoperative patient, which involves collaborating with different specialty departments. The PACU also assists with bed flow by collaborating with surgical teams and nursing staff to optimize efficiency.
