Ambulatory Surgery Anesthesiology

A wide range of ambulatory care services including outpatient surgery, interventional radiology and endoscopy are offered at NewYork-Presbyterian David H. Koch (DHK) Center, a state-of-the-art facility. The Department of Anesthesiology's ambulatory surgery team is composed of a dedicated core group that is supported by sub-specialists in pediatric, regional and obstetric anesthesiology. Annually, we provide anesthesia services to well over 20,000 patients at DHK in more than 20 anesthetizing locations.

Clinical

We care for patients who are healthy to medically complex. Advanced airway equipment, high-flow oxygen delivery, and ultrasound devices are easily accessible throughout the David H. Koch Center. We have a clinical presence in a variety of procedural areas:

  • The ambulatory surgical suite consists of 12 modern operating rooms. Our team provides anesthesia for gynecological and general laparoscopic and robotic surgery, pediatrics, ENT, ophthalmology and regional anesthesia for orthopedic surgery.

  • Anesthesia for interventional radiology procedures is provided on a dedicated floor of the ambulatory center, with one anesthesiologist and two nurse anesthetists providing care across two sites.

  • The endoscopy suite has 11 procedural operating rooms. Procedures range from screening exams to advanced endoscopic interventions.

Education

The Ambulatory Surgery Anesthesiology team provides resident training in the anesthetic management of patients undergoing ambulatory surgery. This is a senior rotation designed to develop the resident’s skills in a high throughput environment. Two CA-3 residents rotate through the David H. Koch Center per rotation. This clinical experience is supplemented by formal and informal didactics, instruction and guided independent study. With the completion of this rotation trainees will have attained proficiency in comprehensive care for healthy patients as well as those with complicated medical problems in an efficient ambulatory setting. This includes preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management and postoperative care utilizing the most current medical knowledge pertinent to each case.
