Thinkers50 Honors Dr. Ruth Gotian with Radar Award

Dr. Ruth Gotian, chief learning officer and assistant professor of education in anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology, was honored with the Thinkers50 Radar Award for her work on optimizing success, leadership development and mentorship.

Thinkers50 is a global platform that identifies, ranks and shares leading management ideas from around the world. Every two years, the Thinkers50 Distinguished Achievement Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of management thinking, recognizes top thought leaders across a range of management categories. The Radar Award celebrates an individual who is most likely to change the world of theory and practice.

In recognizing Dr. Gotian, Thinkers50 noted “the humane route to success is presented with compelling clarity by Ruth Gotian.”

“Being considered the top emerging thinker in the world who bridges theory and practice is not a recognition anyone usually has on their radar,” said Dr. Gotian. “You do good work with the goal of having an impact. I study success and bridge adult learning and leadership theory with practical tools people can use to enhance their success, however they define it for themselves.”

Dr. Gotian received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business management from the University at Stony Brook, and certificates in executive leadership and managing for execution from Cornell University. She earned her doctorate at Teachers College Columbia University where she studied adult learning and leadership and focused her research on optimizing success. In addition to her roles in the department, she is the former assistant dean of mentoring and executive director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Her book The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance is due to be released in January 2022.

In reflecting on the Thinkers50 award, Dr. Gotian expressed her appreciation to the department for being an exceptional academic home.

“Drs. Hugh Hemmings and Kane Pryor thought creatively and boldly when they decided to bring in an educator to the faculty,” she said. “They encourage new ideas and perspectives which is what keeps us innovative and makes this an exciting place to work. My collaborations with the faculty have led to grants, papers and presentations, which I am thrilled about.”
