Research from the Department of Anesthesiology was in the spotlight at the 17th Annual Anesthesiology Research Exposition on November 11 and 13.
The Expo highlights the department’s basic science, clinical and translational research along with quality improvement intitiatives, and provides an opportunity for faculty, residents, fellows and guests to engage in discussion about their research methods and findings.
Dr. Charles Emala was the afternoon's guest speaker, delivering a special research talk on "Anesthetic Effects on Peripheral GABAA Receptors." Dr. Emala is a professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University, and he is the newly appointed Chair of the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER).

Also on the program were oral presentations by Dr. Crina Nimigean, professor of biochemistry and biophysics in anesthesiology, and Dr. Jurgen de Graaff, an associate professor of clinical anesthesiology. Abstracts were presented by Dr.Iqram Hussein, a postdoc in the MADE Lab, and Karl Herold, senior research associate in anesthesiology from the Hemmings Lab.
Following a reception organized by Michele Steinkamp, the department’s research nurse specialist, the day concluded with a well-attended session of poster presentations and lively conversation.

For the second consecutive year, an additional afternoon was devoted to oral presentations and a moderated poster session of work specifically by trainees, with awards for the top abstracts.
