Dr. Louis Maggio Retires

Dr. Louis Maggio, assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology, has retired from the Department of Anesthesiology. Friends, family and colleagues from across the Weill Cornell community gathered in the Griffis Faculty Club on September 30 to celebrate Dr. Maggio's five decades of service.

During the event, speakers highlighted Dr. Maggio's contributions to the department, noting his clinical expertise and dedication. Junior and senior faculty alike recounted the ways that their approach to clinical work had been shaped by having worked with Dr. Maggio as trainees and over the course of their careers.

"He is one of the real veterans," said Dr. John Savarese, professor emeritus of Anesthesiology and a former chair of the department, when reached for comment. "He has carried on the tradition of clinical excellence established by the first chair, Dr. Artusio, and has been a stalwart, dependable clinician for all that time."

Many noted Dr. Maggio's gift for creating lasting personal relationships. Perioperative nursing staff and nurse anesthetists highlighted Dr. Maggio's sense of humor and how uplifiting it had been to work with him.

Dr. Maggio received his MD from Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1960, and completed his residency training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He joined the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine in 1962 and served as an anesthesiologist for 55 years.
