Dr. Daniel Cook Selected for Physician-Scientist Program

Dr. Daniel Cook, an instructor in anesthesiology,  was accepted to the Burroughs Wellcome Weill Cornell Physician-Scientist Program.

The program aims to support MD-only laboratory scientists to become independent investigators. It focuses on mentorship, career plan development, and networking with peers across disciplines and institutions.

Dr. Cook, who is also a Van Poznak Anesthesiology Research Scholar, was one of four Weill Cornell Medicine applicants chosen through a rigorous selection process.

“I am thrilled to be accepted into the program, and it will be a critical component of my research training and career progression," said Dr. Cook. “I think it highlights the incredible enthusiasm and support for physician-scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine.”

Dr. Cook’s research focuses on 1) understanding how calcium channels of the endoplasmic reticulum impact neurotransmission in the central nervous system and 2) whether these channels contribute to central nervous system toxicity caused by local anesthetics. He works in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Ryan in the Department of Biochemistry, and is co-mentored by Department of Anesthesiology Chair Dr. Hugh Hemmings
