Department's 15th Annual Research Expo

The Department of Anesthesiolgy's 15th Annual Research Exposition was held on October 31, 2023 for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Faculty, residents, staff and guests attended the packed event to hear about extensive research being done by colleagues in the department.

The event opened with an oral presentation by Dr. Shifra Lansky, a postdoctoral associate in the Bio-AFM lab, titled “High-speed atomic force microscopy captures a rare and transient protein state.” Dr. Gunisha Kaur, an associate professor of anesthesiology and director of the department's Human Rights Impact Lab discussed her research with refugee torture survivors in her presentation titled "Chronic pain, deportation stress, and cardiovascular risk in refugee torture survivors: determining the links and establishing a diagnostic system.” Dr. Joseph Scarpa , an instructor in anesthesiology, a liver transplant fellow and Van Poznak Research Scholar, presented “Multi-omics for Precision Medicine and Health Intelligence.”

The president of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Dr. James Eisenach was our guest speaker. Dr. Eisenbach is currently the FM James, III Professor at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem, NC. His research presentation was titled "Speeding Recovery from Pain and Disability After Surgery" and included a question and answer session.

Following a reception organized by Michele Steinkamp, the department’s research nurse specialist, the Expo concluded with oral abstract presentations covering topics in basic science and clinical research. Each year, the research exposition highlights the ongoing work of the department's basic science division and Anesthesia Trials Group
