It was standing room only at the Department of Anesthesiology’s 16th Annual Research Exposition, held over two days on November 12 and 14. The Expo highlights the department’s research including basic science, clinical and translational work, and quality improvement initiatives, and provides an opportunity for faculty, residents, fellows and other department members to engage in discussion about their research methods and findings. This year, an additional afternoon was devoted to oral presentations and a poster session of work specifically by trainees, with awards for the top abstracts.
Dr. Hannah Wunsch introduced the speakers to a full house of attendees. Speakers included Dr. Alessio Accardi, professor of physiology and biophysics in anesthesiology, and Dr. Wunsch who is a professor of anesthesiology and vice chair for research in the department. Dr. Sachin Kheterpal, a professor of anesthesiology and associate dean for research information technology at the University of Michigan Medical School, was the afternoon’s guest speaker. He presented his research on “Using data science to journey from retrospective observational research to prospective patient-centered clinical trials.” A lively question and answer period followed the talk.
Following a reception organized by Michele Steinkamp, the department’s research nurse specialist, the Expo concluded with oral abstract presentations covering topics in basic science and clinical research. The speakers were Dr. Seyed Safavynia, Dr. Elena Riel, Abbey Gilman and Jiaxin (Jessica) Xiang.
