Dr. Rasheed Receives SOCCA's 2017 Young Investigator Award

Dr. Abdullah Rasheed, a resident in the class of 2020, was selected by the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA) to receive its 2017 Young Investigator Award. His research, titled “Multistate Perioperative Outcomes of Carotid Revascularization: Carotid Artery Stenting vs Carotid Endarterectomy,” was chosen from more than 95 abstract submissions.

Co-authors are Robert S. White, Tiffany Peng, Xian Wu, Licia Gaber-Baylis, Gregory P. Giambrone and Kane O Pryor.

The study looked at two procedures for carotid revascularization: carotid artery stenting (CAS) and corotid endarterectomy (CEA). It compared outcomes among patients who underwent CAS or CEA in New York, Florida and California from 2007 to 2011.

"Endarterectomy is more common right now, but there's a shift towards using more of the stenting procedure," said Dr. Rasheed. Stenting is gaining favor in part because it's less invasive, he added.

But the data showed there are significantly higher complication rates associated with stenting, or CAS.

"It turns out there are higher rates and odds of stroke and mortality with stenting as opposed to endarterectomy," said Dr. Rasheed.

Dr. Rasheed presented the abstract at SOCCA's 30th Annual Meeting and Critical Care Update, held May 5 in Washington, DC. Founded in 1986, SOCCA is dedicated to the education of anesthesiologists in the care of critically ill patients.
