Exposition 2016-17

12 Annual Research Expo

Research from the Department of Anesthesiology was on display at the 12th Annual Research Exposition, held May 11 in the P3 and M3 wing corridors. Posters lined the hallways, showcasing lab and clinical research studies on topics ranging from lipid scrambling by TMEM16 proteins, to the influence of age and gender on opioid dosage in chronic non-cancer pain patients.

Guest speaker Dr. Stuart A. Forman, professor of anesthesiology in the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, delivered a lecture titled “All Available Methods are Wrong: Mapping Anesthetic Sites on GABA–A Receptors.” Dr. Forman’s lecture focused on the bias implicit in scientific research, and on his work mapping binding sites for anesthetics using substituted cysteine accessibility methods.

Department members also delivered oral presentations to a full crowd. Dr. Simon Scheuring, professor of physiology and biophysics in anesthesiology, and head of the Bio-AFM Laboratory, spoke about his use of Atomic Force Microscopy in the dynamic imaging of individual molecules such as membrane proteins in his lecture “High-Speed Atomic Force Microscopy: The dawn of dynamic structural bio-chemistry.” Dr. Robert White, CA-2 and one of the department’s Van Poznak Scholars, also gave a presentation titled “Insurance Status as a marker of peri-operative risk: case studies using HCUP State Inpatient Databases and the AQI National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry.”

The expo concluded with poster presentations. Dr. Forman, serving as guest judge, awarded copies of Ed Yong’s celebration of Microbiology, I Contain Multitudes, to the two top speakers: Dr. Abdullah Rasheed and Rebecca Joyce.

The department’s annual research exposition highlights work done by its basic science and clinical research divisions throughout the year. Posters and study summaries will remain on display into the summer.
