Global Health Elective has Launched

March 10, 2014

Our Global Health Elective is off the ground! The first official elective trip to Punjab left only 3 days ago and Drs. Jonathan Groden, Pamela Wendel, Gunisha Kaur (all part of the Class of 2014), and David Kopman are having an amazing time. I’m in what feels like constant contact with them over various chat programs and by reading their interactive travel log. Here is an excerpt from today’s first day in the OR’s in Amritsar.

Today was our orientation to the operating theatre at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute. We met with Dr Gupta, the chair of the anesthesia department, and many of the anesthesia residents, aka post graduates, and attendings, aka consultants, who were all eager to answer our questions and hear about anesthesia at Cornell. Jon and Pam had their first experience with the administration of a halothane anesthetic. We also saw succinylcholine and halothane given simultaneously to a one year old boy without even dantrolene available. Apparently MH is not genetically prevelant in India, we will need to look into this more. We also saw a T4 epidural placed for post operative pain control for a mastectomy.

It's very exciting to see our Global Health Elective move forward.

I’d also like to direct you to our newly created “Chief Residents’ Corner”, where you can learn more about our program from Drs. Amin and Littlejohn. Though they are roughly two-thirds done with their tenure, Nivek and Jim continue to work tirelessly at making Cornell Anesthesiology an unparalleled program at which to train.
