Hands-on Ultrasound Workshop Attracts Medical Students

How do anesthesiologists visualize anatomic landmarks? Weill Cornell medical students had a chance to learn and practice the techniques at the department’s Ultrasound Anatomy and Regional Anesthesia Workshop, hosted in the medical school lounge on December 15.

Dozens of students lined up to practice using ultrasound on volunteers. They also used simulators to practice performing epidurals and nerve blocks.  The hands-on workshop coincided with the end of the first semester of medical school and the completion of the students' human anatomy course.

“My goal is to provide early exposure to our specialty and to show students that there is clinical relevance to the anatomy that they are studying, “ said Dr. Angela Selzer, assistant professor of anesthesiology and the department’s assistant director of education. Dr. Selzer visits the anatomy lab several times during the semester and gives presentations to students on regional anesthesia.

Faculty, fellows and residents were stationed around the room as instructors. They included co-directors of the Regional and Acute Pain division Drs. Tiffany Tedore and Ron Weinberg; Residency Program Director Dr. Eric Brumberger; and Drs. Mahendra Samaru, Mohammed Piracha, Alison Krishna and Nick Haralabakis.

Residents who helped teach the workshop included Drs. Daniel Pak, Daniel Cook, Robert Bowen, and Patricia Pang. First-year student Eric Zhang — who became interested in anesthesiology following one of Dr. Selzer's visits to anatomy lab — helped organize the event.
